The financial industry wants us to believe that investing is too risky and too complex and that (of course) hiring them is our best option…
I believed that too until 2012.
Back then I was trying to figure out how to plan for my pension and boost my retirement income.
I trusted banks and financial advisors to help me but all they did was charge a lot of money for pretty bad results.
That is when I discovered index investing and when I realized there was a simple way to build wealth very effectively.
And I was shocked when I realized how much the financial industry was taking away from regular people like you and me (they took 25% of my investments over 4 years!) and how simple the alternative was.
In fact, in the last few decades, investing has become easier and easier for individuals like you and me.
With the rise of index funds, exchange traded funds and discount brokers, investing is now something that anyone with an internet connection can do, and at a fraction of the costs charged by most banks or financial advisers.
Index investing was built upon decades of academic research and practical experience by thousands of investors (such as the Bogleheads) and has also proven to be far more effective than most other stock market investing approaches (better returns, less time required and much simpler to implement).
But it’s important to get the right knowledge, understand how good index investing works, build a personal investment plan and avoid costly mistakes.

Sebastien is an educator and community builder in the areas of personal finance and investing. Formerly he was a management consultant in the field of sustainability and climate change. He reached financial independence (and early retirement) at 33, solely via saving and index investing and since then spends most of his time with his wife and 2 young boys.
He has been helping people start index investing since 2015. In 2019 he founded FIRE Belgium, a fast-growing community of more than 8000 people today who help each other take control of their finances to live better lives.
